Alone in a Crowd

Note: This occurs the last full night before the group left Lanburg to take the book away. It was late whenHarrod had finally drifted asleep. Peace did find him, but not when the dream began... Harrod stood upon the hill as the rain fell and the house burned. He felt utterly alone even as the old man held the shivering boy's hand. Young Harrod, all of four years, turned and looked up at the priest. The tears of the sky mingled with the tears that streamed down the young child's cheeks and washed the soot from the fire down his neck. Within the little boy a voice spoke...

Where are you going? Where are you going? Can you take me with you? For my hand is cold And needs warmth Where are you going?

An older Harrod knelt in the woodshop all alone. He didn't play with the others. They never really knew what to say to him. Alone in the workshop he heard the voice again calling to him as he worked the piece of oak that he had been tending all day. The voice seemed to sing again as it had before...

Far beyond where the horizon lies Where the horizon lies And the land sinks into mellow blueness Oh please, take me with you

Harrod tossed and turned as the dream shifted again through the story of Harrod's youth. Harrod watched the cork bobble and dance in the water's of Gilby's pond. The waters and the cork still as he heard the voice he had long thought silenced...

Let me skip the road with you I can dare myself I'll put a pebble in my shoe And watch me walk I can walk and walk! "Where," Harrod asked to the sky. "Where?" The voice, however, was silent again.

The hours passed, as they always do, and the dream continued. Harrod watched as Risos was reunited with his mother. He felt the pounding of the voice as he understood, at last, that it was not that had been alone. It was the voice that had been lonely. The Voice would never be alone again. Harrod sang back to the Voice...

I shall call the pebble Dare We will talk about walking Dare shall be carried And when we both have had enough I will take him from my shoe, singing: "Meet your new road!"

The Voice sang back with joyous sounds and words of love...

Then I'll take your hand Finally glad That you are here By my side

Harrod smiled in his sleep as Peace had finally found him, and The Creator smiled with him.

The ld certainly has a close

The ld certainly has a close relationship with his god, and thats for sure. This was a good read with a nice pace. What was the Dare referance? Did it mean Harrod had to be daring to  walk closely with the creator?

Why isn't the word 'phonetic' spelled the way it sounds?

Yes. In this case Dare means

Yes. In this case Dare means the courage of his faith to walk with the Creator. The words are actually take from the lyrics of my favorite song from Godspell. You might want to give it a listen if you aren't familiar with it. I can't say exactly whether the way I used the words for this story is the way they are intended, but they always struck a chord with me that expressed devotion.

I am glad you liked it.
