Lurker Requests

There has been increased lurker activity in the games.  Which is great and a very welcome addition to the site.  If someone is lurking in a game and wants notifications of new game related content to show up on their my games page, please send a PM to Chairman, requesting lurker status and a list of games that you would like included.

Perhaps a forum thread for requests by lurkers... if there was something they'd like to read, a scene theyd enjoy ...  somewhere they could log requests? I'd be interested in participating in that.

Why isn't the word 'phonetic' spelled the way it sounds?

Way ahead of ya, mate!

There is indeed such a forum.

It can be found in the  Forums :: Seeking Games & Gamers  area, under the heading Casting Area. It's the location for "GMs looking for Players & Players looking for a Game".

There's also a category for Testing the Waters for people considering running a particular game (check with Chairman first) and Casting Calls for open games.

Cheers!

Actually

Actually,

If you're thinking about lurkers making requests for scenes inside an actual game...that's interesting.  Some of the campaigns do have Request Hotline types of threads where players can suggest scenes.  I see no reason why a lurker couldn't hop into a game relevant thread and request scenes as well.

Of course the scenes are optional...but I love seeing player requested ideas.

Thats exactly what I

Thats exactly what I meant.... clarity not being my strong suit.

Unless I am

Unless I am misunderstanding, we can just use the My Games option, you can select say TCQ or CZ and then select game moves or updates. I feel comfortable with the system, although I would love to see the character sheets. I am a mechanics monkey.

Once I add you as a lurker, you'll have a disappearing table on your My Games page.  It will only show up when there is new content.  It sounds like you've figured out how to navigate the site for new content w/o it, but there are a lot of people that struggle with it.  It'll show everything that you haven't clicked on, with the newest on top.  So even if you don't want to read everything, the new will bump down the old.

I should have you situated by later today.

PS Personally I don't want access to character sheets. I never have the willpower to resist looking and always regret it.

I DO want character sheets.

I DO want character sheets. I like to see what crafty ideas people have come up with.

Character Sheets

well, some of the TCQ character sheets are up.  All of the CZ character sheets are up.  It's really up to the GMs whether or not they post them.

Character sheets for TCQ are only available to the GMs, because some players have powers that they don't want the others to know about, and they range in points considerably.  It's just easier for me and less hectic to keep them private.  I get very annoyed when people peck at a character sheet that I approve.  So, it eliminates any possibility for annoyance on my part.  Not that anyone would peck...but not having them available removes the possibility that could happen.

Or...well, you let so and so do this, if I moved a stat to this EC it would save me points.  Bah!

With that said though, I do make character sheets available to other PCs if it makes sense in game.  A team trainer or if someone does extensive research, in character.

I will likely break down and post them all eventually, but for now, while there should still be some mystery involved, I keep them private.  ...besides, I still need KL to get me an export format that I like.  I've been messing with the default ones in HD...and don't like any of them so far.

See my other note about character sheets.  If you can navigate fine with the other site tools, then you likely don't need a lurker status role.  It just will pop up everything game related that you haven't read, until you click on it, in which case it will disappear.  It could be useful in finding some side stories that you missed, or forum threads, images, things of that nature.  *shrug*

It's mainly for people that haven't found a way to find new content easily.  Some people find the site easy to navigate and for others it's a very trying thing, w/o game specific blocks.

I can make a custom HD export template easily enough. I just need to know what you want it to look like. Give me a good mock up and I'll get one done for you.

Both of these character sheets are HD templates.

ICONS character sheets

Will never be made public. I as GM decided with the firs ICONS game five or so years ago that I wouldn't post the specifics of what the characters can do because I feel it enhances the game. The PC's (and SC's) have been given a super-set of their powers, but not the complete list, and no statistics whatsoever.

I probably wouldn't honor a lurker request to post a character sheet, but that's just me.

Well...you know, I'd be all about getting a lurker to ask, just so I could then get them to share it with me.  *grin*  I'm just that curious.

Since Torchwood said he

Since Torchwood said he wouldn't honor a lurker request for a character sheet, you're still out of luck.

Project: Eradicate

I won't be sharing the character sheets either. I want some mystery to remain between the characters and them to be able to share only what they want other to know about them.

Well...there ya go.

Well...there ya go.  Smile

Basically, the site has the capabilities to post pretty character sheet, it's just up to the GMs whether or not they wanna do that.  And KL even offers to do custom templates.  Yay for KL!

I will post an example character sheet sometime soon.  Or, you can look at a D&D one, in the Cozeroth Cast page, but you need to click through to the character.

Posted Character Sheets.

For me, I would rather not look at a person's character sheet, I like that veil of mystery.  Plus, once you've peeked in the box, it is really difficult to react / plan appropriately. I pride myself on being a creative thinker, and if I don't know the specifics on what somoene can and can't do, then thinking of a plan to go against them will be all my own.  I'm not saying people WILL take knowledge from a person's character sheet and use it in game, but if that information is not available, then it will never be a problem.

The other problem is, if the story is flowing nicely, and a specific incident or power use hapens that might not be interpreted correctly by the GM, or one of the players has an objection too, it can disrupt or even break the flow of the scene, as it gets bogged down. "She couldn't really do that" or " That power doesn't work that way, it should have happened like this."   To me, I'd much rather see the rules get bent, to keep the flow of the story alive and vibrant, than have the rules followed to the letter, and completely change the flow.

After a game is over, or if a Character is being removed from the game, then revealing a sheet is ok, but during an ongoing campaign, I just don't see the point.

Yup Yup

Everything Jbone said....

I'm all for story over

I'm all for story over rules, too... but In the only game where I have control over it, its kind of a non issue whether the info is public or not. The Hero systems lend themselves to keeping the sheets confidential, imho, but in a fantasy DnD game, theres no benefit or disadvantage to making them public, so they are out there, for anyone to read who is curious.

So to me, it depends on what rules system a game employs, but always story over laws.

Why isn't the word 'phonetic' spelled the way it sounds?

Good point.

Great point on system.

Apparently I'm in the

Apparently I'm in the minority. I like seeing character sheets. I like seeing exactly how people envision their character, and how they bought the powers, and what skills they possess and all that stuff.

Of course, some of that probably comes of playing in games where I never did get a clear idea of who or what the other players were. Slowing moving, often stalled, with little or no input from some of the players. It's hard to care about them, or know what sort of connections you could make with them, when your fellow teammates are virtual ciphers.

And some of it comes of being an unrepentant rules lawyer. A carefully crafted character sheet is a thing of beauty, and a cleverly designed power build is always worth admiring...and maybe stealing for an NPC or a PC of your own in some other game.

Character Portrayal

I do think that it's helpful when the GMs actively find ways to clue their players into visible stats and palpable powers, in situations where Character sheets aren't posted.  Encouraging the players to tell the rest of the cast of any powers, stats, etc. that are palpable, noticeable, or impact worthy.  Anything that the other players should know about, in order to help interact and showcase the other person's powers/stats.  ...but I think that can be done effectively, in most cases, without using rules mechanics.

It's especially important for visible & palpable stats, like comeliness and presence.  I actually tend to use numbers for those, just because everyone tends to be familiar with them.  (ex.  Com 18, presence 20)

I think as a player, there is only so much we can do to write our characters as we envision them.  ...a word or two from a GM or another character (written in such a way to showcase your character from another POV) is huge.  So, by sharing those things that others would know and how you would like other character's to receive them, is all very helpful.  More so, in my opinion than a character sheet with numbers.

Although if character sheets aren't posted...there is and added responsibility on the player and GM to make sure to translate those things that are important.

(ps.  I'm still crazed and feverish)

Personally, I consider Hero

Personally, I consider Hero to be one of the best systems for modeling characters, due to its flexibility and scope. It allows the players to describe their creation to the GM in a standard and understandable manner.

But in this kind of game, once the character has been created, the mechanics can actually get in the way, due to the nature of how moves are submitted and actions resolved.

So, while I do confess to some curiosity, I'm definitely in the do-not-show camp, since the purpose of the sheets in this case is that of conveying information player-to-GM. If one character wants to find out what another character can do, there's one method: ask in-character. Smile

This discusion is getting

This discusion is getting very off topic but ...

I find the main use for public sheets is niche protection and to prevent over/under statement of skills. That can be particularly important in super hero games where skills and abilities can widely so vastly.

In reality if you see someone performing a task you are good at (or even just experienced in) you can usually estimate their skill level relative to yours pretty fast and accuratly. But discriptive terms tend to be a bit looser so it is harder to know how much one character outclasses anothwer without seeing the raw numbers.

That said I am still generally aginst revealing them, "remoes the veil" or whatever the term is.

Thread Bump

I wanted to give this a bump.

If anyone needs lurker status to any of the games, let me know.  ...or if anyone's lurker status was interrupted by our permission changes, let me know.

Some of the role names were changed and we had a few issues with getting the My Games page working again.
