Site Issues

Tagged:

We are currently having some DNS issues with our site which is causing intermittent outages. If you are sent to a domain parking page when clicking on a bookmark, link, or by typing nextgenrpg.com into the location bar this is why.

We are working with our host to resolve the problem but we may continue to have outages over the next 48 hours or so. If you are sent to a domain parking page or to a page that says the domain has just been registered you can still get to our site by typing our IP address 98.158.188.43 into the location bar.

line break converter

Tagged:

I turned off the "line break converter" option under HTML input formats. It seems to have fixed the paragraph problem in PMs, without causing any troubles elsewhere that I can find.

But if something goes flooey today, blame me.

problem with theme

Tagged:

Well here's a wacky one. I was getting 503 errors on every page I tried to load...except the admin console. I changed the default theme, and no more 503s.

This is over my head.

Missing Text & File Recovery

Recovery Database:  http://www.nextgenrpg.com/test/

I have restored an old database from June 2010 to the url above.  As far as I can tell, all the missing content is available in the above site.

For those that haven't noticed yet, some of the files from our upgrade a few months ago did not completely transfer over.

Richard Smith kindly brought this to our attention and as we started poking around we saw that it affected several of the other pieces. KL said that in all of the affected files she had to remove some code and that was why they didn't transfer over.

New Moderation System

Due to the spam that's been getting through our filters lately we've implemented a new moderation system on the site where the first post of new users must be approved before it will show up.

This should not affect our current users but if I missed giving someone permission and your post doesn't show up right away, don't worry. We will be checking the moderation queue daily and will be assigning the correct permissions to anyone who is making legitimate posts.

This is only to weed out the people who only sign up so they can spam us and are missed by our spam filter and I apologize in advance if I missed giving the correct posting privileges to anyone.

Great News!

I have great news to share!

I just got our monthly costs back down to the anticipated $20 a month.  We've been paying $35 for the last three months, so this is really exciting news for me AND...for those that contribute financially to NextGen RPG.

It means that our available funds will last almost twice as long!  Woot!  This has been stressing me out for a bit now, so I'm so happy and relieved to finally get our operating costs back down to what we had originally anticipated.

Spam Blocker

Our spam blocker is once again in place. If anyone gets an error when they try to access a page let me know and I'll try to track down what's triggering the spammer protection that shouldn't be.

When you do contact me please provide, at the minimum, the IP address and time recorded on the page you're directed to. If you only provide a link to the page I won't see the same information you're seeing as the content is generated dynamically and only if the request to view the page is blocked.

New Feature

Tagged:

As many of you are aware the site went down for over a week not too long ago. Unfortunately when the site goes down we do not have access to users email addresses and no way to contact users to let them know what is happening unless an admin or GM has a player's email address in their personal address book. I have been looking for ways to remedy this situation and think I have found a solution.

Google Docs provides a way to create forms people can fill out and it stores the information in a Google Docs spreadsheet. I have created one of these forms for anyone who wants to sign up for news when there is an outage or other happening on the site. There is a link to this form in the navigation panel on the left, just above where you log out.

Chat

Tagged:

I've done some checking on this and the problem with chat seems to be our chat module hasn't caught up to the latest version of Drupal. What this means is we have no way to show who's in chat at any given moment.

The good news is chat still works, it's just not as easy to get to and you won't know if anyone is in there unless you log in.

I know I'm missing my chat fix so I've found a way we can use it until the module is updated.

Just click on this link. Chat Room

It will open in the same window and ask for your login info. Just use the same login you do for the site.
