Vernal Steps
- What do you become when you have nothing left to lose?

(Work in Progress)

Survival.  A blessing?  A curse?

They feel it, they know they survived.  The constant ache in their throat from the pains of their loss. The relentless emptiness in their stomachs, from the lack of food to eat.  The viscous images that assault their eyes, as they look at the remnants of their nations torn asunder.  The stench of death, decay and diseases as they walk through a world that once embraced them with life and the familiar comforts of civilization.

The Night of Fire, that's what they called it.  That was the night the stars fell from the sky and rained fire on their almost perfect world. This was the sunset that ended when the oceans declared war on the land and everything in it's path.  The shock of Scondera as it gasped and roared in pain, swallowing mountains and retching their bones back at the devastated earth.

as many broken minds spirit, blah blah

, wives, husbands, children, mothers and fathers - one in every ten survived the Night of Fire.  statistics - blah blah

Blah, blah, disaster, blah,

Blah, blah, disaster, blah, blah, loneliness, blah, blah, loss.  All right.  We get it.  You survived.  Now get over yourself, stop bitching about it and fix the damn place.

The viscous images that assault their eyes...

I assume you mean "vicious" 'cause otherwise the mental image that gives me can't be shared in a family forum. Oups

I'm a baaaaad boy. Evil

1 in 10 survive! Thats not

1 in 10 survive! Thats not much of a catastrophe. I thought you were going to be walking empty streets like 28 days later or I am Legend

Not a catastrophe?

"1 in 10 survive! Thats not much of a catastrophe".

So if 90% of the population suddenly died that wouldn't be much of a catastrophe?!? I'm not sure what you consider a catastrophe where you are, but that sounds pretty bad to me. Sure, it isn't absolute desolation, but still. Smile

BTW, that was after the Night of Fire. Then came the Long Winter which probably killed off another large chunk of folk. Also, this is your typical fantasy realm where population numbers don't appear to be as large as they are in the present day real world (fantasy cities might have 10s of thousands of people but not millions).

As far as I can tell, there are still towns and villages that are completely empty (or are they? Mwuhahaha!). But the world in general is far from empty (just nowhere near as comfortable as it was).
