So what's the feeling amongst you fine folks about the up-coming 6th Edition?  I've only just started with Hero (mostly pulp and urban fantasy), and I like new, shiny toys.  So I'm kinda looking forward to it...

I probably won't switch my games to 6th.  I very likely won't buy the new edition.

I don't know

When is it due to come out?

I'll likely buy it to show my support of the company...but...unless they make it easier somehow, I doubt I'll be switching anything over to it.

Don't know much about it,

Don't know much about it, myself. I'm usually a fan of company support, but switching editions ain't my style unless there's a VERY compelling reason.

But hey, you buy the new stuff, then tell us all about it  :)

Its slated release is GenCon.

I'm ambivalent myself. They're splitting the book up into two: a player's guide and a GM's guide. Certainly not a new idea, but it makes me worry that the system may be suffering from rules bloat, not to mention we're talking a $80 investment to get both.

I'm happy with 5th for what little use it gets right now, so I really have no overwhelming reason to buy it, other than to feed Hero's bank account.

I had no idea

That there was a new edition. Like China, I'll probably pick up the books as a show of loyalty, but won't be switching unless it's painless and there's a huge player benefit to it.

I see no reason to reward

I see no reason to reward what is a blatant cash grab with loyalty.  HERO Games is essentially using the Champions Online release as an excuse to release an unnecessary and bloated revision of a rules system that works very well as it is and is hardly old enough to warrant such a major revision.

Essentially, I see a complany loving their current ed, signing a deal to make a MMORPG, and then suddenly (oh noes!) the current ed is completely broken and needs a total revamp (with mechanics that give the feel of a video game).  Um, no thanks.

I don't know anything about

I don't know anything about why things are changing.  :)

I'm a mindless minion.  I do think that game companies need to make money somehow though.  *shrug*

It's not exactly a super profitable business, in most cases.

I go over to the Hero Games

I go over to the Hero Games forums when I'm bored, although I try to (try to, mind you, not necessarily succeed at) stay away from the Non-Gaming Discussion threads.

There were a number of lengthy threads discussing what would be in 6th Edition. Yeah, Dave, you're probably right that the release of Champions Online is partially the cause for Hero to come out with a new edition. At least they made a point of being open as to what will be in it and werewilling to hear feedback on it.

For me, mostly it's just that I don't play Hero that much anymore (shocking, considering I played it pretty much exclusively all the way from 1st Edition). These days, if I'm a player, I let the GM worry about the rules; if I'm the GM, I use a system that I feel hews closest to the genre I'm running and that I'm comfortable putting aside when the story demands it.

But then, I buy game books for games I never play, so in the end, I'll probably buy the core books just to have them. Wink

 I'd say i'm happy with 5th

I'd say i'm happy with 5th and see no reason to go to 6th, but I was happy with 4th, and now I'm using 5th.

So what I'll say is that a) I reserve judgement until I see it and what new stuff it introduces, and b) I'll probably buy it when someone starts a game that i want to play that happens to be in 6th.  Most likely this will have to be a ftf game.

I've supported the game company enough by buying a bunch of books I've never even used (and a bunch I did use), and by running a lot of games in the system and introducing new players to it.  I'll support them again when it becomes beneficial to me.  That's the only reason I see to support a company financially. You buy their product when it is useful to you.

I am looking forward to Champions Online, but I'll prolly never play it.  But who knows?  If it is freakin' awesome, I might have to dump a piece of my real life to make room. LOL
