We've been seeing a lot of traffic, which is great! I love seeing you guys on.
However, if you're on because you don't know how else to check for notifications, I wanted to tell you a bit about Subscriptions.
To be honest, they can be a bit overwhelming if you subscribe to everything. :) ...however, if you are selective in your subscriptions, they can be very helpful.
The easiest way to get started is to click on the 'subscribe' link at the bottom of your active game move. Then you will be sent an update when the file is updated.
If you'd like to subscribe to multiple games, characters, and such, you can do so in your control panel under the Subscriptions tab. Please take note of the sub tabs that appear, cycling through them will give you more options of what you want to subscribe to.
In regards to Subscriptions, if you're signed up for them and not getting them, please go to your control panel and re-enter your email addy and password, IF it doesn't prompt you to during the subscription process.
At some point we enabled a module that cleared that cached data...or something along those lines, and some accounts will need reverified.
Thank you to Christen for bringing to my attention that her subscriptions weren't working AFTER I posted this. :) ...please let me know if the tools we have out there aren't working, as soon as you notice it. We can't fix 'em unless we know they're broken.
My Games Page - Located in the left hand navigation column, under My Tools. This is NOT the ultimate solution and we'll eventually have something better and more configurable by the user. However, this is an immediate solution for those of you that are looking to find just YOUR game information.
All players will see new game content, blog content, joint posts and forum posts for any games that they have privileges to on their My Games page. This is automatically enabled when privileges are granted so you do not need to subscribe to this feature. IF you don't like it, just don't click on the My Games page.
In addition, there is a table at the bottom, that will allow you to do a quick search for any of the games that you'd like to follow. This table will save the preferences every time you use it, and this table is NOT limited to the games that you have privileges to.
You will still need to check the forum in order to see admin posts, general chatter and anything else not related to your games.
I will happily take feedback on this page. Let me know how it's working for you. Let me know what it doesn't have that would be useful. Tell me if the blocks are too long or if they don't contain enough data. This is the time to get it right, so the more user feedback that I can receive, the better.
Under Create Content, you all should see a Joint Post option. This will allow you to collaborate privately with anyone that you mark as an editor (settings located under Shared Editing). Unless someone is listed as an editor or a viewer of the document, it will remain private.
Upon completion, add a comment that you're ready for it to be published and one of the admins will front page it for you. Or send one of the admins a PM. It will automatically be assigned to the blog of the player that created it, unless otherwise requested.
Detailed Directions
How do I create a Joint Post?
Locate the Create Content link, in the left hand Navigation Column, under My Tools
Click on Joint Post & this will open your entry screen
Required: Title of your fiction piece
Click on the Story drop down box and select the JP acronym (after the JP is complete, this will be replaced by the game acronym).
Unless your piece is adult in nature, you do not need to mess with Rating.
Optional: Characters, NPCs & Villains. Allows you to enter names of important characters in your piece. It will autoselect if it's already in the database, if it isn't it will auto create. Check with your GM to see if they have a preference as to whether you fill this out.
Author is a required field. Try to be consistent with the name that you'd like to use across all of your games. (example: My handles are Chairman and Mayhem, but I use China in the author field.)
Body - This is where you write or paste your intro bit into the Joint Post. Feel free to use the text editor for special formatting. If you are pasting from Word, please use the Pasting from Word button on the text editor, it will strip some of the unnecessary code from the document
Book Outline - This is where you assign your fiction piece to the correct game. You can do this after the JP is completed if you prefer.
Click Preview to ensure your post is how you want it. DO NOT FORGET TO HIT SAVE if you preview first. Common mistake and very easy to forget.
Click Save
Now that the Joint Post is created you need to go in and assign your collaborators. Click on the Access Control Tab at the top,
Collapse or Ignore the first section labeled 'Role Based Access Control Settings'
Scroll Down to 'User Access Control Lists'
Select 'Grant View Access'
Add User Handles that you would like to allow view access to your Joint Post. If you begin typing a name it will autofill. It is important that you get the handle correct in order for the other contributors to gain access. You WILL get an error if it doesn't recognize the handle.
Click the 'Add User Button' after each new viewer.
Select 'Grant Update Access' and repeat numbers 16 & 17.
Very Important. When you are done granting your view and update access privileges, don't forget to SAVE. This is an easy thing to forget.
1. Locate the Create Content link, in the left hand Navigation Column, under My Tools
2. Click on Joint Post & this will open your entry screen
3. Required: Title of your fiction piece
4. Click on the Story drop down box and select the game that the piece is for.
5. Unless your piece is adult in nature, you do not need to mess with Rating.
6. Optional: Characters, NPCs & Villains. Allows you to enter names of important characters in your piece. It will autoselect if it's already in the database, if it isn't, it will auto create.
7. Author is an optional but recommended field. Try to be consistent with the name that you'd like to use across all of your games.
8. Body - This is where you write or paste your intro piece into your joint post. Feel free to use the text editor for special formatting. If you are pasting from Word, please use the Pasting from Word button on the text editor, it will strip some of the unnecessary code from the document
9. Shared Editing - This will default to Private, do not click on the privacy check mark. Type the Handles of your collaborators, this field will autofill for you, if you aren't sure on spelling. Also add any viewers that you wish to add. You will need to click on Add Editor and/or Add Viewer, after each new addition.
10. Click Preview to ensure your post is how you want it.
Now that some of you are becoming familiar with the My Games page and deciding that this is working for you, you may want to turn off some of the repetitive blocks that are also found on your side bar. This is easy to do and I wanted to remind you that this feature was available.
To see instructions on how to add or remove game blocks, go to this link in the FAQ, and scroll down to Block Configuration.
The following blocks are the ones that you may want to turn off, if the repetitive information is bothering you.
new_update_book: Block - This will eventually disappear after you click through all the content. Once that happens you will ONLY see this block if there is new or updated content since your last move.
new_update_blogs: Block - This will eventually disappear after you click through all the content. Once that happens you will ONLY see this block if there is new or updated content since your last move.
This is a quick note to encourage everyone to paste their JPs in a word processor, so that you have a personal copy. We back the site up multiple times a day, but I would hate for anyone to lose anything because the only place they had it was on the site.
Lately, you will notice that your My Games Table at the bottom of your My Games Page, might be flooded with 'Guide Book' posts, as the most recent site updates. I've been doing a lot of tedious work in the CZ and TCQ guidebooks.
Please remember that this table is 100% customizable by you. Hit your control key and choose the games you want it to show you (in the story block) and the content types that you'd like to see (in the type block). If you select all types except for Guidebook and hit apply, it will stop showing you guide book entries on that table, and save your preferences for future visits.
You can also remove a game or two from that view, or choose to follow only one or two. Again, you hold your control key down, and select all that you want to follow, then hit apply.
You can also search for specific content. Like, ONLY blog posts in CZ, or only Game Moves in TR, etc. Just remember that it always remembers your last search and sets that as default, until you change it again.
Remember to make this table work for you! That's what it's there for, a short cut to the content that you want to see, and only the content that you want to see. It's YOUR 'My Games' page, so customize it to your liking. And if you need more help, ask, or look it up in the FAQ.
I think the directions are right there with the table, but I don't think any of you guys read directions. SO, I thought I'd make a point of mentioning it.
On normal days it works fine with no tinkering, but if an admin is doing site maintenance and concentrating on old posts or one game, it'll make that table useless unless you fuss with it.
I had figured out how to limit the table to my games, but I never took that extra step to exclude images and guide page updates n'shit. Thanks for the reminder.

Although, shame on you for not following every single guide book update in TCQ. *grin*
I guess shame on me too, since I only go to the guidebooks if I need to look something up. And if I do I use the drop down menu at the top of each page and never the my games page.

Did you know that there is a back to top link on every forum post?
Someone commented to me the other day how nice it would be to have a 'back to top' link available in the forums. ...and I was like...no kidding, that would be nice. I couldn't believe that we didn't.
...and as it turns out we do have that available. At the bottom left of each forum post is the word 'Top' in red. Click on that and it will take you back to the top.
I'm trying to start a couple of JPs and I do not see the Shared Editing settings. It's been a while since I had to start a JP so maybe I'm missing a step. I checked the one open JP I have and didn't see it there either. Any help?
I think that guide is out of date. After you first create and save the JP, you will then see an Access Control tab when you go in to edit it. At the bottom of that Access Control page is "User Access Control Lists" where you can give individuals the right to see and/or "update" (ie edit) and/or delete the JP.

so many buttons so little time...
Why isn't the word 'phonetic' spelled the way it sounds?
Yep, I knew it. Thought everyone did. LOL
