Editing issues...

Tried to update SM, seems to not be working. Wrote out my piece, tried to save and it told me it was locked by me and I should click to unlock and continue editing. When I did that, everything I'd written had been mysterious removed. Tried just ignoring it and going back to the games page to view it, but still nothing. Hmm.

How frustrating!
If it's not too much trouble, can you give it a go again?
Really sorry about that Ohnanka. Do you still have it open? I want to step carefully....
I can feel your frustration. Usually nothing is ever lost, even when you get an error you can scroll back up and copy the stuff, and insert it later.
The lock thing does have a small error window. So, either a GM or Admin accidentally unlocked it while you were in there, or two people logged on w/i 60 seconds of each other. OR...we have a big problem - and I hope it isn't that!
I'm gonna let Imajica and Bunty resolve this for you, since they're already on it, but please let us know if it persists. ...and I'm really sorry for the lost data. I've had to retype some game moves and it never feels exactly right the second time.
its all right, with the Game-time pacing of SM recently, it wasn't a long one.
Imajica - tried it again just now, same problem. This is the text that was meant to go in:
Next up was James, glancing about wildly, then looking distastefully at himself and futily trying to brush the dust from his good clothes. When he heard the drumming he winced and massaged his temples with one hand, smearing them with dirt from his fingertips.
"Ow." he understated.
As the noise dimmed he heard the new sound of footsteps as Ryan helped Lucy get to her feet, not daring to consider what had happened to Annabelle...
"We need to hide!" He hissed, looking about for suitable cover in the gloom.
Looks like the lock might have gotten stuck. I cleared the lock and posted to the move with no problems. Try again.

Still doing it to me. Hope its not cuz I'm on Ubuntu... anyone else use a Linux OS here?
Damn weird. I went to edit the file, got the "locked by Ohnanka" message, but was able to "check back in" and update it. Hrrm. We used to have a problem like this, but it was caused by a particular module, not a browser or OS.
Ohnanka, let me make sure I understand what's happening. You get that "file locked" message, right? And when you click the "check back in" link, the screen goes back to normal but your edits are gone? But if you try to save the post at that point, what happens? Are you in a loop of "locked by Ohnanka" messages?
I'm kinda stumped. I think I'll pull out an Ubuntu live CD and see if I can recreate the problem.
What browser are you using? Did you try clearing the cache and cookies?
I use Ubuntu and don't have that problem. Now that I think of it I once had that problem but it was a Firefox issue. I think I had to create a new profile and copy over my bookmarks and such to fix the problem.
Just thought of something else I had to do with Firefox to make it behave. It might solve your problem.
Type about:config in your location bar it will give you a listing of all Firefox settings.
Then in the filter box type in network.prefetch-next
Change the setting from true to false.
This helped with the problems I was having with the site with Firefox in both Windows and Ubuntu.

Bunty - Yes, I get locked in a loop. I'm using Firefox web browser.
Heat - Right, I tried that, didn't seem to make a difference, even after restarting the browser...
Its definitely effecting all my attempts to post in either game I'm currently writing in.

Okay. I was going to paste the move into a new document, but if this is affecting both MD and SM, then this is likely a browser issue.
I was also going to give you individual permissions to the game, but I realize that you can GET IN... So permissions aren't the issue, it's the editing part.
If you could bear with us a bit longer while we try to fix this, and humor me a bit. Could you hop into a different browser, like maybe IE (yuck) or Chrome...or anything else that you might have handy, and see if you run into the same problem. It might help us figure out if this is a browser specific issue that we need to find and fix, or if this is a user level issue that we need to find and fix.
I really do appreciate you working with us through this. I'm going to give permissions to both games to that dummy account you created, so if it IS a user level issue, this should get you posting access to both of them. ...I'm not hopeful that it is, but we might get lucky.
I've given permission to MikeMikeson for both games. Let me know if that helps. I'm not hopeful - but it doesn't hurt to try.
I just cleared the site cache, too. Doubt it's that simple but ya never know.
I just sacrificed a goat...
This is a browser issue. I had the same problem awhile back that was affecting me in both windows and linux when I used Firefox. I'm trying to remember all I did to try to fix it.

Ohn, try backing up all your bookmarks and such, uninstall firefox, make sure all files in the firefox directory have been deleted, re-install firefox, re-disable the pre-fetching, check if you can edit a move, then re-import your bookmarks if everything is working ok.
I remember when I had this problem it was a pain in the ass to resolve but it was definitely a problem with Firefox.

He's not running windows so he can't run IE and I'm not sure Chrome is ready for linux yet. He does have a couple of other options but they wouldn't be browsers you have heard of.

Evolution seems to work fine. Too drunk to update properly tonight, though... *hic*
Yay!
...not that your drunk...but that's pretty fun.
I'm happy that it's a user side browser issue instead of a site issue. I am sympathetic though and extremely grateful for KL's guidance through this. Hopefully it won't be to big of a bear to resolve on your end.
We don't want Torchy sacrificing any more goats than he has to.
Chrome runs beautifully on Linux. Better, dare I say it, than Firefox. And if they could just fix the Firebug extension to work just as it does in Firefox, I might be tempted to jump ship.
I've tried using IE 8 and Firefox and I'm getting the same problems as described above. I've tried on several of my ZP pages.

Sorry about that art. What OS are you running? Is there another browser you can try? Can you point us to one of the pages you were trying to edit?
Windows XP Home Edition. SP3.
ZP Boston White Sheet - April 7th - as an example of one that didn't work. I tried several pages and none of them worked. I can try and download Opera or Chrome tonight.

Bleh. I haven't been able to recreate the error on my own XP SP3 box with Firefox. It's tough narrowing this down. What version of Firefox are you using? Sometimes the latest greatest upgrade can cause issues.
I've tried manually changing the access control on that move. See if you can access it now.
I've never really been able to recreate this problem either. The one time it happened to me it turned out to be a browser issue on my end and it was a pain in the ass to figure out and fix. It had to do with the pre-fetching setting in the browser which had to be disabled for it not to continually lock me out.
I have no idea how to fix this in IE as I have never used it but you can find the directions to fix it in Firefox further up in this thread.

I've tried with Chrome and Opera and I'm getting the same problem in both browsers.

If it's happening on all your browsers, but only to you, I think we're going to have a hard time pinning this down.
Any recent changes to your computer, network or router?
I'll put my detective hat back on tonight...
Well I did have to reformat my computer and Norton AV Internet Security is running in the background now. I haven't switched out to another AV software yet. Norton is the biggest difference from what I had going on before. Nothing network or router related.

Norton is notorious for causing problems similar to this. Can you try disabling Norton and trying again?

That did it. I need to switch out my AV.
