Captain America rises from the dead for new series

In this comic book image released by Marvel Comics, Captain America is shown AP

Why isn't the word 'phonetic' spelled the way it sounds?

Commie

I read it as a kid. I loved it. It was much more than a "rahrah the USA is great" comic. I realize, that in this day and age, its passe to love ones country. But Steve Rogers did, even when his country didn't particularly show love for him. Compelling stuff.

I'm not blah blahing love of

I'm not blah blahing love of country. I served four years in the armed forces to 'do my duty' and all that. But I've just never liked *any* superpatriotic characters much, regardless of nationality :)

I'm sure there were plenty of good heavy stories written over the years, but his "bring em back from the dead" thing is always so yawntastic. If there's not a true threat of death, the sacrifice made is lessened.

Cap has always been one of

Cap has always been one of my favorite characters. Even more than Superman, he exemplified to me the true concept of a superhero, mainly because he wasn't a "my country can do no wrong" patriotic zealot. "I don't fight for the flag, I fight for the ideal."

Then, at some point, the deconstructionists took over and succeeded where countless villains had failed. They brought him down. Stripped him of; his costume, turned him into a parody. I had stopped reading comics by then, not because I had outgrown them, but because I couldn't bear to see the crap they had turned them into.

"Civil War" was an abomination. I was stuck at a Borders for a couple of hours and found myself skimming through the trade. Never in my life has a comic made me that angry. The writers had, to all intents and purposes, dropped their trousers and defecated on almost every single character concept in the Universe just so they could tell this stupid story.

When I heard that Cap had been killed, all I could think of is, "A sniper's bullet. They couldn't even come up with an original method. He'd been 'killed' that way at least twice before in the books. Once in a 'What If" story, and once in the Cap-Punisher team-up (which actually wasn't as bad as it sounds)."

And you knew he'd be coming back. From what I've heard, even that is unoriginal; the plot sounds like it's right out of the "Death of Superman" thing, with the alternate Caps. Feh.

The Captain America I loved went away years ago. At least he still lives in my memories and my heart.

The "Revolving Door of the

The "Revolving Door of the Afterlife" in the comics is a lot of the reason I stopped reading them.  Well, that and a lack of money to indulge in the early 80's. :)  Loved the characters, writing and artwork during Claremont's run on the Uncanny X-Men.  What?  Comic book superheros had quirks, flaws and were actually (usually) human?! That definitely caught my attention. LOL

Then the bit with Jean Grey/Phoenix Force, Magick and Limbo, the stuff with them in the Australian Outback and Mojo... *sigh*  I understand that a "happy" superhero (in professional, super and personal life) doesn't sell comics, since you need the drama, the tension and everything but man... that doesn't excuse poor writing.

Anyway, I also figured they'd bring Cap back.  I knew they wouldn't leave him down forever.  But I did like the idea of him becoming a "legacy" character.  Someone else with similar attitudes picking up the reins.  Just... not Bucky.  Smile

That I could have lived with... the man's got more lives than a mutant... :)

(Bit late to this but...) He wasn't killed by a sniper. He was "killed" by his girlfriend who was being sort of mind-controlled at the time. Cap did jump in front of a sniper's bullet to save the life of one of the agents bringing him in, but it only wounded him.

Yes, we all knew he was coming back. They're not going to kill the main iconic sells-lots-of-merchanise character. Same thing happens with characters everywhere, in books, on TV, in films. And especially in comic books.

And there wasn't multiple Caps - just Bucky.

Brubaker's recent Cap run was very, very good. A little slow at times but excellent storytelling. I'd certainly recommend it.

(Have to agree that Civil War was... erm... flawed, to put it kindly)
