Star Trek
Simon Pegg once finished an exchange in Spaced with the words "Sure as every odd-numbered Star Trek movie is crap." And he had a point.
Star Trek: The Motion Picture? Failed attempt to jump-start a second series.
Search for Spock? Better, but not by much.
The Final Frontier? Right. Here starts David Warner's long association with Trek. This time he's human. Watch out, he's coming back as Klingon soon, then Cardassian. Fairly sure he's been Romulan as well...
Generations? Failed attempt to jump-start an acting career (could go for any of the cast, but I'm looking at you here, Shatner)
Insurrection? Wanted my money back after watching that turkey.
And that brings us back to JJAbrams and the latest incarnation.
Watched it for the first time last night and it reminded me why I used to like Star Trek. It's got a wonderful sense of humour running through it - the computer failing to recognise Chekov's authorisation code because he can't say his Ws properly, the use of stock Trek phrases we know and love, the good old "If these calculations are correct...". My favourite has to be "If there's any common sense in the design of the enemy ship, I'll be putting you down in the cargo bay. Shouldn't be a sould about" from Pegg himself.
This is one of the few occasions where I've watched a movie that has so obviously pressed the big, red, button marked "Reset Continuity of Universe" and enjoyed it so much.
I want another one now. Hell, they deserve a series after that. It's got to be better than that destination Mars shite that's on the Beeb at the moment. And it can't be worse than Enterprise. The second the guy opened his mouth and started singing the theme tune I switched off.

Comments
Agreed on the movie.
I sat and listened to the ST grognards piss and moan about how it didn't look right, they didn't do things right, they weren't supposed to know about Romulans, wah, wah, wah.
My general response finally filtered down to: open your prosthetic-laden ears, you nim-nulls, they say it right out in the damn movie, it's an alternate reality. That means that your much-vaunted grasp of Star Trek trivia goes right out of the window. So simmer down with a nice warm cup of STFU.
The movie captured exactly what made Star Trek a favorite to me, while managing to add a whole new layer of freaking awesome. A second (or third movie) is not a matter of "if" but "when." It remains to be seen whether they can keep the spirit going. (I have this nightmare where some head-up-his-arse producer decides that Abrams can be replaced by someone like Michael Bay).
I thoroughly enjoyed both Star Trek: The Motion Picture and Generations. Otherwise, I thought the latest incarnation was very good (not excellent, but very good).
I thought it was entertaining and quite good, but I was not wonderfully thrilled by it. It certainly had it's moments but there were also a few niggly things about it - such as what had Nero been doing for 25 years and why didn't Starfleet send the rest of it's remaining fleet to save Earth - that didn't help. Still, it was a success and, yeah, I'm looking forward to see what's to come.
And hitting the continuity reset button was certainly the right thing to do. Star Trek's fortunes had been on the wane ever since Voyager - so something had to change.
Do you mean Defying Gravity? Or some other spacey/Mars -related show on the beeb? (BTW, they're currently heading towards Venus. They've already been to Mars).
But... but I really like that show! It's like Lost, but in space (as opposed to Lost In Space which is something different).
That to be accompanied by a slow-motion shot of my mug of coffee hitting the floor to the sound of "Nooooooooooooo!"
Yes, Defying Gravity. That was it. Man, I want that hour of my life back. They could've labelled the entire programme with the old Trek acronym GNDN (Goes Nowhere Does Nothing). That show is desparate BBC Execs and their "quick! Channel 5 have just bought Flashforward! We need some edgy Sci Fi show!" And hearing that it's like Lost isn't making me any keener to try and get into it.
I loved Voyager with all my heart.
Don't judge me.
I left my "since Voyager" comment deliberately vague and purposefully didn't confirm whether I meant since the start, middle or end of Voyager. :) I liked Voyager at the beginning but then lost interest after half-way through or so. I get the impression that was also the case for a lot of folk.
As to Defying Gravity, as I said earlier, I really like it. It's a great character show, which uses flashbacks to flesh out the history between the people plus has an added "What's this Beta thing all about?" mystery. Mind you, I seem to be in the minority because the number of viewers plummeted after the first two episodes (and weren't exactly great in the first place). Plus, it's now been axed.
Talking of Flashforward, tomorrow the Beeb's version - Paradox - starts. I wonder whether I'll remember the name of the characters in this one.
I read somewhere that the kid who plays Chekov is signed on for 2 more movies (incidentally he also plays Reese in the new Terminator series, and he's signed on for 2 more movies there as well. Talk about not having to work a day in your life again.)
The whole main cast of Star Trek signed on for two more movies. Next one is due for release mid-2011.
But just imagine his schedule of convention appearances!
That's just superb. But it's also a shame to have to wait until 2011

I really enjoy(ed) Defying Gravity, and wish the bastards would release the remaining episodes onto iTunes...
Grr...
Don't judge me.
I do an awesome Captain Hepburn.. uh, i mean Janeway... impersonation.
