New Toy!
I got myself a Palm Pre on Saturday, as you might be able to tell from my shiny new avatar. I am loving it so far, and I was going to make a post using it here on the forums, however I am running into a bit of a snag. I can select and type into the Subject field, no problem, but when I try to set focus into the body area, nada. I can select things from the text editing toolbar above, like the table button, or Bold, but when I try to actually set focus into the body, it doesn't go. If I just start typing, the text goes into the URL bar for my phone.
The "switch to plain text editor" option is also not showing up on my phone, so I was wondering if anyone out there uses a mobile device to make posts, could you give me a pointer or to, maybe there is some setting I need to adjust?
Thanks in advance!
J

First off, congrats on the new toy! Looks very shiny indeed!
I'll take a dig into the settings, see if there's a way to get the editor disabled for mobile browsers - if you can, can you find out what the "User agent string" your browser sends is? Not sure what the easiest way to do that is. Alternatively, if you can find out the software make and model of the phone's browser, that might help.
Another option might be to try installing Mobile Opera onto your phone, if that's possible - www.opera.com - A different browser might fix the problem for you. Not sure.
Rest assured, though, we're taking the problem on board and will look at doing what we can. I do know there are alternative mobile-friendly themes for these websites that lay things out better for mobile devices. Could be that might sort out some of your problems.
Congrats on the new toy!
I don't have much to offer that can help except to say I had a similar issue with my Moto Q 9c smartphone, which runs Windows Mobile.
Is the issue with both the forums and editing the game moves, or just with the forum?
I've offered to install a mobile theme for mobile users, but the ones that I've talked to have said this one looks good on the phone.
I have an autodetect module and a couple of mobile themes downloaded and ready to go if anyone would like for me to implement them, AND, help me test them.
They aren't pretty though.
They're already installed on the test site. Just holler if anyone wants to help test any of this mobile stuff. Unfortunately I don't have a dataplan on my phone, so I can't test it. ...and since everyone said they could see it fine, I wasn't overly worried about it.

On the test browser, I have browscap installed, which is an autodect mobile feature. I also have a mobile theme and iphone type theme, installed. ...and something called mobile ????. It was all super easy to get up. BUT. I haven't tested any of it, I don't have the tools.
But feel free to take a look at those modules on the test site, and see if will help your 'finding' efforts.
I'm not sure if this is what you are asking or not, but the OS is Palm webOS 1.0.2 , and the browser is Web v1.0 by Palm Inc.
I can see everything I've looked at on the site just fine, granted I haven't had a chance to poke into ever corner, but what I've tried to look at showed up perfectly. My issue was the lack of a cursor in the body section of a forum post. I can go right now and try to edit a game move and see... update incoming.
Edit: OK I can get to the edit tab, and when the page fully loads the body section is completely blank, with none of the exsisting game move data, and my same issue still is there, I can't put a cursor in the body.
Point your browser at mini.opera.com and have a look at the site through Mini Opera. I'm just testing the latest Opera 10 beta here. The browser detection scripts don't recognise it, so I don't get a wysiwyg editor at all! Might work on the mobile one as well.
Hmm, I'm not getting an option to download it, I think I'll have to try when I get home and port it over to my phone then.
Just a heads up, I won't be able to help with this as I can't test anything. I don't even have a mobile phone much less one that allows me to connect to the internet.

You can see the site just fine, but cannot reply to anything...
Just thought I'd throw that out there.
You should be able to do that, no problems. It's a java-based application effectively. I've had it working on WinCE devices but I don't have a Palm I can try it on.
At the risk of sounding completely tech -stupid, I don't think Opera is a viable option for the Pre at this time. It seems it can't run w/o a Java environment (JVM) and when I was digging to find that, I ran across this informaion:
There are thousands of free and commercial applications for PalmOS. But some of the best applications for Palm devices, like Opera Mini, don't actually run on PalmOS. They're Java midlets that run on a Java Virtual Machine (JVM).
For the past few years, Palm has offered a free download of IBM's WebSphere EveryPlace Micro Environment JVM. But for some unexplained reason, Palm will stop offering a download link on Jan 12, 2008. Palm will still offer support for anyone who has already installed the JVM on their device, but no new customers will be able to grab the virtual machine.
So if you haven't already downloaded the awkwardly named WebSphere Everyplace Micro Everyplace Micro Environment now might be a good time to grab it. The JVM will not run on older Palm devices like the Tungsten W, Tungsten T2, or Zire 71, but if you've purchased a Palm phone or PDA in the last few years you should be able to download and install this free application.
Being stubborn, I tried to download the Opera Mini file to my PC and transfer that file to my Pre, but the Pre is not listed on the phones supported by Opera (go figure, it being new and all). So I think I'm stuck for the moment, unless I'm being amazingly dense and overlooking some other option.
I do want to thank you for the help, I wouldn't have discovered this otherwise!
I tried downloading Mini Opera on my Moto Q 9c and it was a no-go. I'll need to do some more investigating (maybe I need to update the JRE; now that I think about it, I'm not even sure if I have a JRE loaded).
In any case, it's not a critical thing for me. I have my HP Mini now and a broadband modem, so hooking up to the Internetz and checking sites is relatively easy now.
Looks like there are some emulators available but I haven't played with them yet.

According to Torchy (I'm probably gonna slaughter this translation.)
Apple products don't run java, and the issue is likely as simple as our WYSIWYG editor being a java program.
I know that the Palm isn't apple, but it sounds like they don't run Java either.
IF...this is the case.
Creating another account, and disabling your text editor in the profile, might be your easiest option. ...but I could be completely wrong. However if someone would like to try disabling their editor in their Control Panel and trying it, I'd be interested in hearing the results.
Why create a new account? Just turn it off in the control panel when you're using your phone and turn it back on when you're on your computer. Much less confusing to everyone.

Not Torchy, but me!
The editor we're using is a javascript editor, not a java one. We'd be in a whole extra world of pain and discomfort if it were java-based.
Disabling the editor in the profile sounds like the easiest way to solve the problem for now, though it doesn't explain why the contents of the edit tab are blank.

I did an experiment with my browser by turning off javascript and got the blank edit tab myself. Maybe the phones are having problems with javascript.

Javascript, java. whatever.
If they both have coffee in them, they seem the same to me. *ducks*

Ooh, I should give you such a pinch for saying that!
Are all of the other tabs blank or is it just the Edit tab?
I'll take a look on the PDAs at work tomorrow, see what works and what doesn't on there. I can also steal/borrow a blackberry to give it a spin.

Nestor, it's a lost cause with China.

Ok, now that I've tried it while awake. When I turn on the editor and turn off javascript I get a text box on the edit tab but none of the editor's features, it's not blank. The other tabs seem to work fine.
