This thread is the place to discuss out of character matters.

If you have any questions on something that is happening in the game and you would like a further explanation this is the place to ask. You can also use this thread to talk about anything in general that does not fit in one of the other threads.

Character Generartion

Hi everyone, as I explained in my casting call I am not setting a fixed number of points per character but building each character based on the overall concept. This is how it is going to work.

First and most important: Give your characters the skills they would logically have from their background. I know the average person has a number of skills related to their job and hobbies that a lot of people do not spend points on when they build a character. I would like to see those skills. The only caveat is that you keep it realistic.

I will be using Hero Games' guidelines (paraphrased) on how skilled a person is by their roll which is the following:

8-: Familiarity (skill levels do not apply)

11-: Competent. Can perform routine tasks easily and can perform difficult tasks with a little effort. Enough to get a job using the skill.

12- to 13-: Skilled. More difficult tasks become easier.

14- to 15-: Very Skilled: Master of the skill. You can just about do easy tasks in your sleep and can perform more difficult tasks fairly easily.

Those are the levels I would like you to keep your skills to with most of them falling in the 8- to 11- range. Higher levels start putting you among the top people in that skill and would make your character too high profile.

Second: Characteristics. All characters will take Normal Characteristic Maximum at no cost. While this will allow you to go up to 20 with your stats I am asking everyone to please keep their stats below 15 except where a higher value is within concept. Remember, normal people have 10s in everything and for the most part all of you are normal.

Third: Powers. I will be working with each of you individually on these. I ask for you to build your power the way you envision it working and then work with me to keep it within both your vision of the character and my vision of the game's power level. My plan is for the characters' powers to build with practice and use so I may ask you to make your character a bit weaker to begin with and surprise you in the game by having it work better than you expected when you need it the most (or when it is the least convenient).

Fourth: Disads. You are free to give your character as few or as many disads as you like but remember, too few and I might assign a mysterious disad or two. The campaign hunted will be taken by all characters and does not count toward your regular disads.

If anyone has any questions or needs clarification or help please email or PM me.

Multible Personalities

I just realized I am posting game information under two different account names and some of you may find that confusing.

I have two accounts at Next Gen. One, the Heatwave account, is my general account. The other, the gypsyav one, is my admin account. If I have been working on the site I sometimes forget to switch back to my general account to post.

If you have any questions about the game you want to PM me about please send them to the Heatwave account.

Good thing I found this

Good thing I found this forum. I was about to send you a post in another thread asking for pretty much this information; I'm still learning to navigate this site. Smile

One small nit-pick, which you can ignore at your pleasure; in Hero, technically, normal people (As in Joe/Jane Average) have 8s in the primary Characteristics. Heroes start with 10s because, well, they're heroes. Wink

It just further supports your point that our characters should have modest Chars, a concept, BTW, that I fully support. One of my small annoyances about the system is that characters are sometimes forced to have inflated Chars (specifically DEX and SPD) regardless of their character concept just so that they can function in the game.

Which brings up another point. In Hero campaigns, it is traditional to present aceptable ranges for things like SPD, Active Points. etc. I understand you're going for concept here, so Active Point limits aren't as big a deal, and the Skill ranges are certainly helpful, but could you expand on the Chars a bit more?

I realize that you're using Hero more as a modeling language than an actual infrastructure inthe game (i.e., we're not going to be using the rules mechanics as much when actually playing). It still helps to translate concepts such as "he has inhuman reflexes" into actual numbers.

Again, my apologies if I'm coming across as too OCD. I'm still adapting to this new format. Wink

All good points, Nestor. I

All good points, Nestor. I know about the average Joe/Jane non hero having 8 in their stats. With trying to get the site moved I wrote that in a hurry and didn't clarify myself.

I would like people to keep their Characteristics below 13 unless the concept requires higher. Any higher and they would be starting to get into the realm of Olympic quality athletes, supermodels, and Einstein.

Works for me.

Oh, what about PRE? Does PRE Defense (i.e., additional PRE, Defense only) allowed?

If would depend on the the character concept and background.

I was writing up a blog for

I was writing up a blog for Jason and came up with a question.

How are you going to use the pushing rules?  I know standard Hero is 10 pt push, normals is 5 pt, I think, with an ego roll.  House rules vary, etc.

Not a huge deal with the current blog, just determines how I write it, but it might make a difference in the game some time so I wanted to check.

I'm going to use a house rule combo on this. You can push 5pts, 10 with an ego roll.

Cool, thanks.  So with a normal push he can just about lift a car, but with an ego roll he could lift one, really briefly.

Yep, that sounds about right.

How will that work with

How will that work with TK?

Will a push get 5 AP (which in Jack's case wouldn't even get him +1 STR) or +5 STR?

Let me think about that one.

Let me think about that one. I'll probably go with what is best for the story at the time.

I know that's not really a rule as such but don't want everyone easily pushing their powers and taking any challenge out of things.

No worries. As long as the story is foremost, I'm cool with any ruling.

Speaking of which, when are starting again? <twitch> <twitch> Big smile

ROFL ... Great game concepts

ROFL ... Great game concepts tend to thave that effect on characters. I, myself, am not quite at the 'twitching' stage, but I'm getting close.

Yup. I'm itching to put

Yup. Smile

I'm itching to put some of the story material floating in my head for Jack on paper, so to speak.

He's a somewhat modified version of a character I played many years ago in a Champions campaign set in Canada. Great memories; one of the events that stand out was him acting as midwife at the birth of a demi-god. Cool

Later Today

I had one of the players withdraw from the campaign so I need to rethink a few things but don't worry the game will still start today, just not as early as I had hoped.

First Thread Posted

Sorry for the delay everyone. I was only able to get the first thread finished, featuring Jason Cohen and Nathan Marshall, but I will have the others out soon.

Real life kind of smacked me upside the head and sent me for a loop so I'm behind schedule but the game is still on and I am still committed to running it.

Stay tuned for the rest of threads.

Updates to Moves

I have posted updates to both the Recruitment stories. I should have updates out to both Man On the Run stories tomorrow and start a new chapter for Innocence lost by Sunday.

New Moves Delayed

I lost a good friend today and I'm not sure how much writing I'm going to be able to do for my games. Sorry guys, I know some of you are waiting on me and I'll get something out for you as soon as I can.

We're not so far gone we can't understand priorities. Do what you need to do, take the time you need to take.

We're here if you need anything.

Going Forward

I'm still a bit down from my friend's passing but I think I'll be able to get back into GMing. I will try to have new moves out for everyone this weekend but please be patient with me if I can't get them done.

We said it before and we'll say it again.

Take your time, KL. The game won't go away and we'll still be here when you're ready.

Player Turnover

Nestor has decided to take a break and has stepped back from all his games so he won't be running Jack going forward. I'll be NPCing Jack until his current scene is over and then he'll be fading into the background so please don't plan anything involving him.

Ready to go

Things have finally settled down for me to the point where it's no longer a chore to write. Can I get a role call of who's still on board? I know Nestor decided to take a break from all his games, is there anyone else who's cutting back?

Lem

Lem has also encountered some real life stresses.  He indicated in an email that he'd be leaving all of his games, but to my knowledge never got around to telling the GMs.

It might be worth an email to verify.

So far it has affected Mason in TCQ and Garrick in CZ.

Thanks, that's what I thought
