Resurrecting an old game, The Faust Chronicles

I've been toying with resurrecting a 'campaign' that I tried to run on the old GG boards and Uberworld. I think the format here would be much more conducive than an actualy PBEM game.

It'll definitely be rules lite, (iow: I would want character profiles instead of sheets). The basic premise would be based on the Old, Friday the 13th, the tv series. a small group of mystic investigators, barely more than skilled normals that look for, and retrieve cursed or evil magical objects.

They'd be funded by a secret society dedicated to the preservation of mankind from these objects. It'd be eposodic in nature (like a tv show) with serial development. (iow each 'episode' would be self contained, but character development would build on past events.) I originally created the campaign to directly explore the 'cost' of magic to the everyday person, and to help develope my own story telling skills, leaving the majority of the character development opportunities to the players and focusing on plot development, and setting. the focus on the game is shared story telling, not dice or power building.

Since I'm time restricted, the best *I* could commit to would be a minimum of 1 official game post per week, updates mostly on Saturday or Sunday. Since I'm time strapped I'd be sharing the 'gm/director' duties with KL(HeatWave/Gypsyav) who will also be a player. That'd leave me with a potential cast of 3-4 additional characters. The focus would not be on combat, but investigation and protection.

I might be pulling some of the background elements from the Unisystem Witchcraft setting by CJ Carella, and Eden Studios but that's still undecided.

Anyone interested?

Definitely interested! I just watch the SciFi TV miniseries, THe Lost ROom so that whole "weird object" thing is still on my mind. Smile

If you haven't seen it, you MUST!
Very good stuff (and Kevin Pollak actually acting instead of doing stupid impressions)

I loved that show!  I loved it more than it really deserved, because the execution was generally a little lacking - but the basic premise was terrific.  Anyway I would definitely be interested, and a slower pace would be great for me these days.

Yay on Faust!

I'm glad to see that you're thinking of running a game Darren.  You're talented and have a lot of enthusiasm, I could totally see you driving this.  Thanks again, for your practicality and the thought you put into pace and your schedule.  You might be surprised, at how the pace can continue at a pretty fast clip even if you aren't there to drive it.  If you go with an NPC light game, provide the characters with the information that they need via PMs, they can go for quite a while, with no GM input.  It's when you corner yourself into things that require NPC input that the game can start to crawl.  Phone conversations, interrogations, conversations, anything like that.

I'll send you an email with the information that we'll need if/when you decide to run.  I just ask all GMs to seriously consider their commitment level before doing a casting call.  I know it's impossible for all games to go on forever, but I'd like to maintain a reputation as much as possible, as a place where GMs are committed to their games.  We all know that cycle of abandoned games and games that never get off the ground, all to well.

I've been there and done that myself.  Sometimes real life will do that to us and when that happens it's okay.  ...but it's the only thing I ask of a GM before they start.  *grin*  Are you SURE?  (I hope so.  :)  )

I also loved the Lost Room.

I also loved the Lost Room.  And the actor in it.  :)

Great recommendation.

Thanks for the compliments

Thanks for the compliments China, (blush). I had fun with the previous incarnations, but the format wasn't conducive to what I wanted to do, and the players weren't used to the idea of not having directed missions, etc.

Once I fell behind due to various RL concerns it was almost impossible to get the ball rolling again. That's why I wanted to see if there was any real interest, other than KL and myself. Smile I'm still on the fence, but I think I could work out the logistics, as long as I have excited and dedicated players. This would be very freeform, as I'd be relying on the players/characters much more so than other games.

Kl, Yes you'd get to run Liz. I know you loved that character and I feel bad about letting her languish in the limbo she's been stuck in. If you're willign to help me bring life back into this beast, I think I would like to try.

Bunty, glad to see you're interested. I loved the show too, the premise was fascinating, much more so than Poltergeist the legacy.

Fox, I've caught bits and pieces of it back when it started, but I don't have the Sci fi channel anymore, so watching it is kinda hard. and with my time limitations I have little time for anything other than vegging in front of something mindless before collapsing into bed on weeknights.

One of the things that I do for all of the GMs, is help with recruiting.  This gives me an opportunity to get our name out there on various game related forums, and in turn will hopefully get a rich pool of submissions for the GM to pull from.

Since this is a reboot, I understand that you might be inviting previous players, which is grand, and may not need help with recruiting.  ...but if you do, you can count on me to post your casting call on several gaming sites.

I'll be sending emails to old players to check interest levels, but the only known continuing cast member will be KL. I'll let you know more as this solidifies.

I knew I could count on you for lots of support. :)

Yup.  Yup.  Most seriously.

I'm committed to helping GMs find quality players for their games.  I still believe in running what you're passionate about, build it and they will come.

Interested, yup.  Didn't know there'd been a series of Friday 13th but the Poltergeist show always struck me as someone's Call of Cthulhu campaign.

Count me in if you're starting this up.

Well I haven't heard from previous players but it's been only a few days. I'll work with Kl and get something together as a formal submission.

Its good to see that there's some interest here. Smile

Well the series didn't really

Well the series didn't really have anything to do with the Friday the 13th movies. :) It kind of just traded on the franchise name,

It lasted 2 seasons I think before being canceled. Some of the episodes were just bad, but others showed promise. I liked the concept and it's pretty dark, which allows for plenty of good drama and character development potential.

I should be able to keep it pg-13 though that'll depend on the themse the players/characters want to explore.

It looks like I've sufficient interest to warrant another attempt at this grand experiment of mine. :) I'll work on the particulars and give a shout once I'm ready to call for players.

Read through your initial call - it refers to a campaign page we should read, learn and inwardly digest to help in getting our characters together.  This something you're working on now?

Faustian Deal

Hi Darren,

I'm interested in jumping in to the game again, but I'd prefer a new character.  Bathory was cool, but I think I'd prefer to make up a new one with enough to keep storylines going on the side (eg character development).  I'll email you as well, but thought I should try out these forum board things as well.  I haven't played a NextGen game before so it'll be a learning experience for sure.

Cheers
Ben

Sheesh!  Sounds like everyone

Sheesh!  Sounds like everyone wants in on this one!

Hey - that's an idea!  One game.  One mad, ubergame that everyone one the site is automatically a player in...  Would have to be something silly like Toon or TF2V.  No GM, no meta-plot.  Absolute anarchy!

chuckle, actually, while getting bitten isn't funny in any sense, you gotta love her sense of timing. :)

I'm eagerly awaiting yours and all submissions. :)
The ending of the call is 7/24 for all interested parties, I decided to extend it after I asked KL to post.
