Just installed Drupal 7 Alpha 1 on my testing server and I am loving it!

Install modules straight from the web without having to go through FTP or CLI!  Lovely overlays for creating content, administering settings!  Gorgeous admin navigation at the top of the screen!

Now...  Got to get a list of the modules we're using here and set up a proper NextGen7 test server.  I'll keep y'all posted!

*goes away to poke around some more at the new shiny goodies*

It has been said that Drupal

It has been said that Drupal is a resource hog and this is causing pain with the NG host.  Will the newest version of Drupal help or exacerbate the problem?

Reckon it's got to be one or two specific modules we're using on this site and I'm not using on others - I've had no complaints from my host having 6 drupal sites running in a multi-site setup and 2 other sites in other directories...  If we could work out which modules they were, things would be cool.

Plan...

Get a complete copy of the NextGen site running on a dedicated test server and watch resource usage as different modules are switched on and off.  Once I've got the time to do that, things'll get better.

And I really don't know where your tracker tab has gone...

I've been watching 7

I've been keeping an eye on what they have been doing with 7 but hadn't had a chance to play with it. Sounds like I'm gonna make the time.

I was wondering the same thing.  I assume it has to be better...cuz the idea of upgrades is making them better and more efficient.  Laughing out loud

That sounds like an amazing plan, pending your availability to do it.  We're really lucky to have someone in a position with resources to do this kind of testing.  Once upon a time someone told be that some of the modules we were using were resource hogs, but darned if I can remember which ones.  Smile

Well, it was a part of core, the tracker portion (thank you KL).  But I don't know how to find it and turn it back on in the systems table.  Don't know where to find the core stuff.  ...or how on earth it could have been turned off in the first place.  It's the darndest thing.

Any idea when it will be stable enough to run a production site on?  :D

Yeah, when it's out of beta and right now it's only in alpha. Smile

What's wrong with running

What's wrong with running alpha software?  My Linux laptop sits perpetually on the bleeding edge of the alpha releases and I've never had a problem.

Well, there was that one time it lost the wireless connection when it applied an "upgrade".  Oh, and that time it went black and white on me...

Ah, like Windows ME - the only operating system to ship with its own diagnosis.

Haven't people realised that the only reason for upgrades is so that the software companies can make more money out of you?

Think back to the 90s, pre-Windows 95.  You had a 386 with maybe 8 meg of RAM.  It ran Wiundows, it ran word 6, and it ran them fast enough for you to work comfortably.  Now look at your desktop PC.  It's a dual core P-something with 4 gig of RAM.  It runs Windows, it runs Word 2007 and you spend your days thinking it could be faster.  No-one writes tight, clean, efficient code any more.  The answer is always to throw more RAM or a faster processor at the problem.  Database slow?  Oh, you need to upgrade your hard drives to faster ones.

Drupal 7 will a ton of efficiencies, tighter code and some excellent new features above and beyond those in Drupal 6.  It will also bring with it it's fair share of increased dependencies and system requirements.  We'll have to see.  One interesting test I plan to run is to see what the resource usage is of 2 identical machines, 1 running our current site and 1 running a d7 version...  I'd say it'll be fun but that's a pretty strange definition of "fun".

Hmm. Moving to Organic Groups whenever we move to Drupal 7 sounds like a reasonable timeline...

Especially since OG is one of the modules that has committed to having a release available when D7 officially gets released.  So have Views and many other very useful modules.

Well, the whole point of companies is to make money. That's why they exist. Nothing wrong with that.

And if people didn't want the upgrades then they wouldn't produce them. People are always wanting some other feature or new bit of functionality. You've said so yourself up above how great the new Drupal 7 features are.

Most upgrades are bigger than the original. If the original was done right, then they already made it as efficient as they could at the time. So to add new things - which might just be a new HCI - it's going to take more resources. You don't get sommat for nuthin'.

The latest version of Windows is hundreds of times "better" than the pre-Win95 ones. It certainly does more and looks fancier. (Of course, it doesn't mean it's perfect. Or particularly good).

Oh and... I like chocolate.

Oh, I agree. It was Imajica's comment that first/original software builds were apparently near-perfect and that upgrades were only done to make money out of you. Tongue

Depends on the company

It also depends on the company. There is one piece of software I bought at version 4. It was good, did nearly everything I wanted but when they came out with 5 it was even better. The upgrades were cheap, easy to install, and you could uninstall the previous version and do a clean install of the new one. This continued up through version 9 then they sold out to a larger software company.

I bought version 10 expecting this same level of quality. What I got was software I couldn't really tell a difference in from the previous version except for a few things moved around, it was more expensive than previous version, and I couldn't uninstall 9 then install ten. Plus I had to enter a code while installing it I never had to worry about before.

Some companies do upgrade to improve the product, a lot only upgrade to get you to spend more money. And the larger software companies are more likely to fit in the last category.

Absolutely nothing wrong with it. I have no problem with using alpha software myself, I can usually work around any glitches that come up. I just don't recommend it to others. Smile

You missed out. Although it wasn't as random as the poor librarian from eastern Sibiria who wanted me to send her a wood burning stove so her disabled mother and gifted son could survive the winter! Why did she think I might have a spare stove lying around, and how was i supposed to post said lump of cast iron to her in the back of beyond?

The issue with running Drupal7 on a production site right now is due to many security flaws in the system that the dev's are aware of but not ready to fix just yet.

You do NOT want a CMS package with major security flaws running as your production site.

I, too, have a version 7 of Drupal running in test phase, and it is most awesome. You need to make sure that your host has certain configuration directives installed and enabled for PHP. Many of these are not required for 6.x versions of Drupal and might require your host to recompile unless they are unwilling to install them.

Hope I didn't barge in, but thought you might not mind the info.
