Predicting the future.

So.  In the blue corner, we've got Flashforwrad.  Steve from Coupling and one of the Hobbits who weren't Frodo and Sam have done something that caused the entire world to see the future.  A future that people are now changing with varying degrees of success.

In the red corner, we've got Paradox.  Assorted extras from various BBC shows congregate in Manchester where a strange (and frankly, very punchable) scientist seems to be receiving pictures from the future from his big funky sun-spot-activity-monitoring satellite straight to his computer (which isn't networked to any other in the building but is hooked up to the CCTV system).  All very strange and apparently some kind of MoD project (Ministry of Defence).  Officers race to change a future
and fail
.

I know they're hoping that Flashforward will get a second (third, fourth...) series, so they can't keep the whole mechanics of how and why the blackout happened hidden for much longer, and having it happen again would be pretty poor.  Where Flashforward will have 20-odd episodes, Paradox is probably only going to get 6 or 8 at best.

Dunno.  I'm enjoying the slow-release of Flashforward.  I'll enjoy it a whole lot less if they don't actually explain anything, mind.  Paradox has more irritating characters and has the British problem whereby you spend the whole show wondering what else you've seen the main characters in.  It was refreshing that they ended the episode the way they did.

One thing I am fed up of, though.  "Next week, on..."

I thought Paradox was very,

I thought Paradox was very, very good. Certainly well directed. Yes, it doesn't look as flash as an American show (eg. Flashforward) but it's directed in a more exciting manner. And the ending was quite shocking.

I thought it was a bit better than Flashforward - though, as my wife pointed out, it's not really like Flashforward (except for the "seeing the future" schtick). This feels like a mash-up of Spooks, Casuality, and a dash of CSI. Also, living not far from Manchester, it's interesting to see familiar locations (the MoD project is located in the Imperial War Museum). Though I'm not sure why they used real names for some locations (Manchester, Wythenshawe, Salford) but made-up ones for others (Marlingham. for example).

It's a pity they're making out Dr King, the physicist, as being a bit... mad. And a dick. We're not all like that you know! (though one or two do work here where I work). What does he do all day? Sit in front of those screens looking at pretty pictures of the sun (and police detectives in their cars)? At the end, he went home for the night but the computer and screens continued gathering data - so what's this supposedly highly intelligent doctor needed for?

Though I tend to agree with you, the "Next week, on..." bit here was quite amusing and interesting. One of the images was of a pigeon and the other was of one of the main characters looking somewhat, erm, dead. Given the ending of this episode, that doesn't bode well for that character.

BTW, this is scheduled for only 5 episodes (which takes us to Christmas). So there may not even be the 6 or 8 that you mention. Sad

Only 5 episodes?  Well, can

Only 5 episodes?  Well, can but hope it's a trial run to see how well it would do.  It's been a while since we had a main character who you just wanted to lamp but that physicist was just unlikable.  Anyway.  It was an amusing array of images for next week.  Interesting to see how they're going to get them all to line up the way they did this lot.

I hope they don't start going down the route of being able to change things.  I mean, yes, work really hard to try and change things but then see how your attempts to change things actually set up precisely what you've seen.  I'm sure they've got to have a win in there somewhere - but if someone's flagged to die, they're going to die.

And just how much counselling is that Peter bloke going to need!  The police knew about him, about his mobile, about the little girl who was going to die, even about the frisbee!  He is psychologically screwed.  All that after having lost your job!

I got the impression that they were trying for a physicist version of Hugh Laurie's House - the doctor you love to hate. Similar grizzled look. Similar annoying 'know-it-all' personality. Unfortunately, it didn't quite work.

He's screwed!

Although this was not shown, or even implied, in the episode I thought it would've been interesting if the success the team had was in saving that Peter bloke. Without King and Flint's involvement, assume Peter would've died on the train. But by warning him about the girl, he moved down the train, away from the epicentre of the blast and thus he lived. So they did change the future whilst not changing the events shown in the images.

Perhaps changing little parts of the future - but still not avoiding the general catastrophe - will be something they explore in later episodes? I'd be happy with that. The events are destined to happen but they can still do some good.

Looking around the interweb, I see that the reviews for Paradox are generally bad. I'm about the only one who liked it. It doesn't bode well for another series.

Hey, I've just found out that

Hey, I've just found out that the mid-season finale of Flashforward was shown over here in the UK before the US. We saw it last night whereas it won't be shown until 3rd Dec in the States. So we can spoil it all for 'em! Mwuhahaha! (the kangaroo was real)

Mind you, I bet no one else is watching it so who cares.

I'm watching it. I just haven't decided what I think about it yet.

Last weekend I watched all

Last weekend I watched all the episodes of Flash Forward. I think it got off to a great start but has been floundering. However I'm still intrigued and will keep watching...for a few more eps anyway.

Will check out Paradox.

I'm thinking I want the other

I'm thinking I want the other hobbits plus Geoff and Patrick from Coupling to make cameo appearances in the rest of the series.  I'd also like them to start sneaking in Trek references for Sulu.  But then, that's just me.

Maybe he should start wearing red shirts. Wink

"Damn it, Dem! I'm an FBI agent not a fortune teller!"

I see in Paradox that they went and changed the "future". Still enjoying it, mind you.

Love it! And Paradox.  Yeah.

Love it!

And Paradox.  Yeah.  Interesting how they changed the future.  You could've argued the the photo of the boy was taken when he was in the water before they'd rescued him, but the cop they saved....  Would've been interesting if they'd not seen the photo of him dead until after they'd saved him, leading to a whole discussion on just what constitutes "the future" - it isn't going to happen if you've not seen it happen...

Yeah, enjoying Paradox.  It's still on probation, mind.  Doubt it's going to get a second series.  Anyone remember "Sea of Souls"?  That was the last time the Beeb tried anything vaguely supernatural/sci-fi.  Didn't last long, as I recall.

Wikipedia tells me that it lasted 3 seasons/series. Which isn't bad for a Beeb show! Although it seems somewhat familiar I don't really remember it. I think I probably saw an episode or two and then that was it.

BTW, the Beeb did Apparitions and are doing Being Human which are both supernatural series. And, of course, sci-fi wise they're doing Dr Who, Torchwood, Sarah Jane. I'm sure there are others.

OK, OK.  So we've got Who,

OK, OK.  So we've got Who, Torchwood and the rest.  And Being Human, which was a work of genius.

Alright.  Maybe I only remember the failures.

The first 2 seasons of Sea of Souls were pretty good, the third changed most of the cast and bombed.

Stop showing me up!
