This is the thread to use to help us work out any issues that we might have. Or a place to share what's actually working for you in the fun department, so that your GMs can make sure to keep it that way.

Any comments made in this section will be replied to in a civil manner, and will be taken in the best spirit possible.

We all want to have fun, so utilizing this thread when issues start to surface will help us all in the end. We don't want the game to self destruct because of issues that could have been resolved, if the GM(s) had known about them.

You may also feel free to email me at any time regarding issues that you're having with the game or other players. I like to consider myself approachable and eager to help or accommodate whenever I can, to help make the game a better experience for everyone involved.

Elias and Michiko, is there a girl around?

Okay i'm just curious if either Elias has trouble telling adutls apart from other children or is he being deliberately disrepectful of the Japanese woman whom he found himself on the street with. I am trying to be reasonable about this but I hope that the player realizes that Michiko is a woman.

I'm just looking for some clearity, is all. \\

Thanks.

Underlining and capital letters can sometimes come off stronger than you might intend them to, especially without the use of emoticons.

So thanks for pointing out that you're just looking for clarity, at first I thought you were upset.  Sad

I reread the move, and I think that Catstacker has some really great stuff in the move.  I can't imagine how difficult it would be trying to play an 11 year old.  :)  And kudos to him for taking on that challenge.

Unless I'm missing something, the only words that he has spoken to the Japanese woman were, "Excuse me,".  There is nothing disrespectful in that.

I see your references to girl, but those were internals, and not something that should effect your characters response to the boy.  If your character has mental abilities, my most humble apologies, I'm only giving my two cents from what I'm reading and what I know of the characters.

I think however, that in a collaborative writing environment like this, more so than any other method that I've played in to date...trusting in your writing partner is extremely important.  And only responding to the things our characters can see and hear, while that can be challenging at times, is very important.

There's some great stuff in that move.  :)  I think you clarified that she was a woman, in case it wasn't already apparent to Elias.  ...but, if he chooses to continue thinking of her as a girl, certainly plausible for a youngster, I think that's okay.  ...and if it comes up in dialogue, she can feed him to a dinosaur if she finds it disrespectful.  *grin*  That'll teach him!!

And I'm just curious if Michiko is having trouble telling the human child apart from shrubbery, or is being disrespectful of the small human whom she found herself on the street with. Twice she's referred to him as a twig!

I am trying to be reasonable about this but I hope that the player realizes that Elias is a human.

I'm just looking for some clarity as well...

(I'm probably going to get smacked by the admins for this)

It's my bad.  When I read Michiko's entry in the Getting to Know the Characters thread, I read that she was 17 in 2004, and I failed to do the math that clearly shows that she's reached the wizened age of 21 by now, and is legally a woman.  She would still look like a girl to me, but to Elias she must look old, so I've changed the generic "the girl" to "Michiko" when the passage is descriptive, and to "the lady" when it reflects Elias' thoughts.

I've been having fun playing a naive character, though I have to confess that I've been using that as a crutch when I'm not sure what to do.  I've been rolling a d20 to see whether Elias has any particular knowledge of anything.  So far he can't tell the difference between a lizard and a dinosaur, and in all his eleven years in the city he's never encountered a twig, though Elias knows a four-letter word when he hears one.8)

 Thank for the clarity

Chairman: Thanks for the advice.

Torchwood: She referred to him as Twig because he was young, slender, and got blown into her by the wind. Also because she didn't know his name and as a term of affection.

Catstacker: Thank you. I appreciate that it was just a misunderstanding. No harm, no foul. I just wanted to be sure Elias wasn't dismissing her because he thought less of her.

Thought crime?

Well, unless Michiko is a telepath, how could she know what was being thought? What would it matter anyway, this is just some kid who, as you say, got blown into your character by the storm. The point i'm attempting to make here is that one PC should not be allowed to control another PC's inner monologues - maybe this kid was bullied by people like Michiko growing up. Maybe he's just an ass and thinks less of people in general. The why's of it don't matter - if he wants to think of her as a girl instead of a woman (and the player admitted he made a mistake of four whole years in determining her age) then he can. Your assumption of disrespect was immediate and public, and I don't see any basis for it in the writing. Maybe a Private Message would have been more appropriate here.

Article Torture Threat

Okay BoyZ,

If you guys don't watch it, then I'm gonna have to write another article, concentrating on the in character and out of character dynamic of collaborative roleplaying.  And the delicate balance that must exist between the two to both keep it real, while staying on the same page for story purposes.

AND...nobody wants China to write another article.  *shakes head*  Nothing ever good comes of that.

These feedback threads are great, because it allows us to bring items like this up, with the goal of keeping things nonconfrontational.  We can all get defensive about our role playing and GMing, feeling that the other players aren't trusting enough or are doubting our ability to role play.

I think that what concerned me, when this issue was first brought to the table, was that it was done so publicly (one) and that I felt it might diminish a new comers confidence, because someone was second guessing his role play (two).  In retrospect, I should have stayed out of this.  Because it isn't my game (one) and because Catstacker handled it with the utmost respect and maturity (two).

I immediately became concerned, because like Torchwood, if this comment had been directed at me, I would have taken offense.  I would not have handled it with the same grace and maturity that Cats did.  :)  What I write that doesn't contain "quotation marks" around it, is for the most part sacred.  For anyone to react negatively to that in or out of character, is a violation of what I feel to be a respect for my role playing.  Shame on me.  Bravo on Cats.

Now, with that said however, I think that it is a GMs responsibility to keep tabs on internals.  Make sure that they don't become a detriment to the game.  It can get very old if a PC is constantly thinking derogatory things that affect the readers opinion of a situation, but do not allow the other PC to respond in their own defense.  And if the continued use of the word 'girl' would have weighed heavily upon you, then it is most certainly fair to take appropriate action to try and remedy that.

When it comes to anything that another player might take as an assault or insult to their role playing, items of that nature are best filtered through the GM.  I think that in general, players are less defensive when a GM ask them to tone back or change something.

And here's where China and I disagree

But that's ok :)

IMO what the characters are thinking is not up for edit unless it is factually wrong - ie: Fish nest in pine trees and rear their young on a diet of gold. Sure it can be annoying if someone's character thinks your character is (fill in the blank). But unless it becomes painfully obvious through repetition, especially where those thought balloons have no basis in the current scene:

Nem and Phi are having dinner, discussing the latest baseball scores and all Nem is thinking is "Jesus, but Ardent is a dick. Dick dick dick..."

Then I think we should not meddle with that characters inner monologues.

Where China and I DO agree is that if you as a player are becoming frustrated, then take it to either A: The player who is frustrating you, or B: The GM.

But it's Alex's game, so now i'm shutting my mouth. And yes, Cat did handle things very maturely - I bow to you sir (or ma'am).

Oh yeah!  Good idea, that.

*offers hand to SDT for a good slap*

The last word (I hope)

Okay so I think we are all agreed that the fundamental issue has been resolved to everyone's satisfaction. If not, I will be happy to engage in as many debates as one might find entertaining. (Its in my nature to argue my point when I feel I'm right. )

That being said, I would like to bring up that afforementioned point. That is that it was my understanding that this was the place to air such commments, critques, complaints, etc.  That the entire point of having this area of the forum was so that issues could be discussed and resolved (as this one was, thank you) without directly affecting the game.

And really as I said before, I wasn't as much complaining or critizing as much as trying to get an understanding.

If this is not the place to do that for this campaign, someone please tell me where it is.

Thanks. Big smile
F8

This is definitely one place

This is definitely one place to do it.  However, when it's directed at just one character, at that point, I think it's better to try and be handled privately and off list.

Getting singled out publicly could be considered embarrassing or an over reaction in some cases.  Not to mention opening the discussion up to others and getting feedback that one or both parties may not like.

You certainly have a valid point, F8.  I just considered this thread would be more geared toward the GM when things weren't sitting well with players.  When they had rule challenges, when simple ooc questions didn't suffice, etc.  I assumed that everyone had a similar social impact filter as I did, and if a private PM would suffice, it would be the logical first choice.  I don't mean that in a negative manner, it was just an incorrect assumption on my part.

It has shown me that a better conflict resolution blurb could be added to the description of this thread.

Well, I'm just watching at

Well, I'm just watching at this moment, but it seems like most everything has been settled fairly well.  I don't have a problem with using this thread to air any questions or concerns, similar to what was done.  My only request is everyone takes a deep breath before responding to anything on this thread, and assume everything is intended as non-offensively as possible.  In particular, if it is an issue between two other players, let them handle it with my supervision.  What I don't want to have happen is one person voices a problem or opinion here and get dog-piled by everyone.  This hasn't happened, that I've noticed, on NextGen yet, and I'd really like to keep it that way.  I've been on both ends of that in other games, and it never turns out well.

So in summary:  Air any problems you have in this thread as politely as possible.
Keep any discussions civil and assume the other person doesn't mean to offend
Don't jump in unless you are involved in the problem.  Or are the GM and/or boss person in charge of the site.

In any case,
Let's have fun out there. : )

Good work.

I just wanted to say to Catstacker that I really liked his last post for Elias and that I'm very very impressed by his consistency.

Now I wonder if Michiko or Barbie will be the first one to try to console poor Elias.
If you want it to be Barbie, Chairman, I'll let you have it.

In this case, I think it

In this case, I think it should be first come, first serve.  So long as it's in character for a character to do so.

I'll be at Petsmart ALL day today showing my foster pups, so I likely won't have a chance to post till tonight or tomorrow.  Not something that needs to hold anything up.  Have at it, if it's in character for Michiko to do it.

Thanks.  I knew that I had to

Thanks.  I knew that I had to be first to respond to the GMs introduction, so that Elias' personal crisis could get out of the way of the rest of the story.   I'm not so sure how consistent I've been with Elias so far; I've been imagining him as a little bird that switches between wanting to fly and wanting to get back into his egg.  Now that little bird has been dumped out of his nest.  The mystery of whether it's Michiko or Barbie who takes him under her wing will decide for me which of two ways Elias' character can fly.

I'm Sorry

Hello All,

I'm sorry to have to do this, but I'm going to officially close the Torg game.  I just don't have the time and energy to do it right now.  You guys were great and stuck with me through a lot and you deserve better, but I don't see it happening.  Thanks for playing and all your efforts for the game.  Again, I'm really sorry.

Alex

I'm sorry to hear that, and

I'm sorry to hear that, and I hope you feel better.

I do think we had a quite successful run, and I had a good time.

Thanks for the game Alex!  It

Thanks for the game Alex!  It was fun while it lasted.

You are very welcome.  I'm

You are very welcome.  I'm glad you had as good a time as I did.  Thanks to all my players for making things fun.

Archive

Heya Alex,

I understand where you're coming from.

I'll move the TORG forum to the archive section, as well as the image gallery.  It will be here if you need to reference it again or decide to resume play or hand it off.

Thanks China, I'd be happy to

Thanks China,

I'd be happy to hand the game off if anyone was interested in taking it over.  I just don't have the energy to run it any more.

I can run the game if

I can run the game if everyone still wants to play.  The game that I was trying to start this summer isn't happening, so I've got some time and energy.  Would you still like to play a character, SDT?  You could take over Elias, or maybe play Akio Tanaka.

Count me in.

I would like to see the game continue if there is a GM interested in running it. Smile

I'd be happy to play.  I'd

I'd be happy to play.  I'd probably take over Elias or bring in my own character.  Do you want my notes on what was going on?

I would be very interested in

I would be very interested in seeing the game continue as well.  It might be helpful to know which characters still have an active player behind that as well.

I'd love to see this game

I'd love to see this game continue for the players, but I should probably use this time to bow out.

As it is, I'm really struggling to keep up with TCQ.  My schedule is so crazy I hardly have time to breathe sometimes.

Continuing

I think I can continue, too - it may take me a little while to play now and then, but I think I can keep playing Jeff/Felix.

story notes

@ SDTroll: Definitely send me any notes you've made so far; I'll improvise until I fit the story together with a new character balance.  Are you going to take an existing character or make your own?

Getting back to the action.

I've edited the last part of the story to make it easier on readers to feel the action, and players can jump in.  I'll put a tag at the bottom of the text to let everyone know when the next round is happening, and what the approved actions are.  This round's is:
(ooc: Heroes initiative. ACT: Intimidate/Trick.)

I need all the players (except Jeff's) to send me their character sheets, or post them in the Characters thread or here.  I don't know what drama cards everyone has either, but I'll just get everyone to tell me which ones they want to keep at the end of the scene.  It's easier for me to just post what cards everyone earns; does anyone want to keep their cards secret?

And let me know if there's a particular direction you want your characters to develop in.  We could take this story down a lot of different routes.
