NaNoWriMo Yet Again!
Tue, 09/14/2010 - 13:29
Less than two months away! I've been working slowly on rebuilding the game system that I was using to write the first three novels in DragonGrace. Now I've got a new system, a new sensibility about it all and I've got my main characters down for the next installment in NaNoWriMo/DragonGrace.
I'm geared up for 50,000+ words and hoping that this year I can get a good gritty understanding of some of the other parts of my game world. The character voices are already chattering in my background thoughts and I'm obviously excited to begin writing, but I will wait until the November 1st flag falls and the typing begins.
Anyone else in it again this year or for the first time?

Comments
This will be my third year doing NaNoWriMo and I'm looking forward to it. Not sure what my story is going to be this year. I'm still working that out.

I'm planning to enter again this year. I didn't complete it last year, but I'mm gonna drag my wife into it as well, and perhaps together we can both complete it. :)
I'm planning to try it. This will be my first attempt.
Now in stompy size!
Last year was my first and I managed to finish with a little over 50,000 words arranged in a semi-coherent manner. I'm planning to take a run at it this year provided I come up with sumpin to write about.
I am calm this year so, barring any physical/mental hardships and in solidarity with my new girlfriend, who will be studying hard for her final year, I think I will actually take part this year.
I don't particularly care if I finish or not, but its good motivation to really get down and write one of my two novels that have been on the back-burner for the summer, lol!
Like most, barring unforeseen distractions such as Real Life, I plan on pounding out a crappy novel this November. Not sure what I wanna do, yet...maybe a fantasy thing. However it goes, I'll be giving it a shot.
I'll be giving it another go. 50,000 words from where I left off last time should take the story quite a way forward...
What names/Regions will I find you chaps under?
Im in Glasgow, Scotland (Unsurprisingly) as M.Innes, Novel is 'Ghost Image'
USA :: North Carolina :: Elsewhere
Husband, Father, Gamer, Programmer
Scotland / Other. You're looking for Dogbombs and I don't know what the novel's title or plot is going to be yet. Hoping to have some inspiration over my holiday.
USA :: Indiana :: Elsewhere
Now in stompy size!
USA::Florida::Tampa
I'm in there as gypsyav

USA :: Michigan :: Elsewhere (Elsewhere in this case means Kalamazoo)
My user name is Richard L Smith
Dunno what my story is going to be yet. I've entertained ideas involving pagan gods trying to stay relevant in a judeo-christian world, and a tale that takes the zombie concept back to its voodoo roots, but the contenders right now are a fantasy tale which would be my take on a basic dungeon crawl, and a reimagining of the Star Wars prequel.
USA:: Arizona :: Phoenix Area
I'm in as Darren42 I believe, I've got go searching for the log in.
I'm toying with another supers inspired plot using a character that was the loose basis of Ghost from Project:Eradicate. I'm going to use this as a way to tie him into the Olympian's gameworld (with KL's Permission of course.)
Alternatively I may work on something involving the cast I created for the piece published in This Mutant Life. just not sure.
USA :: California :: Sacramento
User name - admelior (of course)
I might continue the crossover-supers story I wrote last year, or I might get this fantasy idea out of my head. Still waffling.
And Darren, you're "Darren5472"
Who wants a bar on the side of the site to show everyone's progress again this year? If a widget is provided again this year we can put it up so people can see where everyone is.

oh yeah, we need the widget
Thanks Dave. I forgot!
ROFL.
widget ... widget.. Widget ...Widget ...WIDGET!!!!
Yeah, we need a widget!
Just be careful when telling others what kind of widget you want.

Gasp! KL is ebil! KL is ebil!
I'll be participating. This will be my second year of NaNoWriMo. My novel from last year, Strange Attractors, is currently sitting in the slushpiles of five New York publishers. (Well, after the Nano effort, I eventually added another 20,000 words, but still...)
I have no idea as of yet what I'll be writing. Possibly....
The Adventures of Iron Maiden (superheroes)
A Lost World novel (in which our hero, unbeknownst to him, actually shadowwalks to all these exotic locales)
An urban fantasy in which supernatural critters are like the mafia--everyone knows they exist, but relatively few people have ever actually met one (to their knowledge), and much what is known about them is composed of myth, legend, pop culture notions from movies, self-serving confessions, and a tiny smidgen of the truth.
A (private) detective novel starring Lloyd Greystoke, the Man-Ape. (Former actor turned P.I. specializing in weird cases because they keep turning up on his doorstep.
Or something else entirely, to be determine when I sit down and start typing on November 1.
I will NOT be participating in NaNoWriMo this year. I've reconsidered. What with my father's hospice situation and flying back to Virginia to see him next week, trying to get the house ready for sale and selling the house, and looking for work...writing has to take a back seat for a while. And especially something that would give me another deadline to worry about.
So no NaNoWriMo for me this year.
But good luck to all y'all!
Wow, sorry to hear about your dad. Much love to your family.
Add my family's love to Richard's.
Thanks, guys. I appreciate it.
Sorry to hear about the rough patch Mark. Take care of you and yours.
With NaNoWriMo beginning tomorrow I'm still not entirely sure what I'll be writing. I have three ideas. Two are viable. One is a fantasy tale which would be my take on a basic dungeon crawl. Throw in a sense of horror and suspense, and a dose of social commentary and that's basically it. The problem is I'm not sure which of the characters is my hero.
The other option is a reimagining of the Star Wars prequels. I've been thinking about this idea since the crappy movies came out and I feel like I have to write it some time. The problem here is I feel like I'm wearing someone elses shoes.
I guess I'll find out which story I'm writing when I sit down tomorrow and start typing.
Good luck to all you guys. See you at the end of the month.
Sorry to hear that, Sin. Best wishes for you all.

While I'll not be participating in NaNoWriMo, my 11-year old daughter decided to give it a shot.
She's got a strong start, putting down over 2k in the first day. Makes a papa proud!
She's got a strong start, putting down over 2k in the first day. Makes a papa proud!
Good for her!
I'm 2683 words into my story and I've decided to start over. I know you're not supposed to, but my characters are all cardboardy and shit. I have another idea that's slightly blasphemous. That should give me something to work with.
Good for her.

Start over? What are you thinking, man?

Hammered out a plot line last night. Hopefully it'll give me something to work on now. I'm not optimistic about finishing but I'll at least be able to make an effort now.
You think I'm mad, don't you?
Working my way slowly, doing it by hand in the few hours after work before bed. Doing my first piece in 1st person view. i'm about 1330 words at the moment. Slow gong but not bad for only a coupleof hours each night. Imgoing tohave my wife type what I have up tomorrow so I can post it to the nanowrimo site.
Looking good, going good. Revisiting a short story I worked on a while ago. Got to say thanks to the cast of Slainte Mhath here for letting me try a few things out on them! This is the intro:
Stephen slunk in through the back door, wincing as it shrieked in protest at being opened at such an ungodly hour. Bloody night shift. Bloody night shift in bloody October. Bloody Halloween coming up as well. Still, he'd been warned about the shifts when he took the job and the pay was good.
Slowly, carefully, he inched the door shut, muffling the squeaky hinge with gloved fingers. Oil in the toolkit in the van. Job for later. His eyes adjusted to the gloom in the kitchen, he spotted a hole in the back of his right glove.
"Dammit." He locked the door, took off the glove and examined it closer. Ichor. He could definitely smell ichor. Another job for later. See Milo, requisition a new pair.
The kitchen was lit by the glow from three clocks. The one on the microwave blinked in cheerful ignorance, 00:00. Have to check the wiring on that one. The PVR shows 1:49, flicks over to 1:50. The radio, smug in the knowledge that it's listening to a Radio 3 time signal says it's 5:07AM precisely. Stephen shuddered. Long night. Still, better than last night - it's not light yet.
He unhooked the bastard sword from his belt, eased it onto the butcher's block near the sink and slides the blade clear. Looks clean enough, give it a once-over with the cloth in a minute. His long fingers trace the runes etched into the blade. Not for the first time, he wonders what they're for.
He opens the freezer, removes the padded storage case from the fake bottom drawer and places his pistol and spare ammunition inside. Finally, he hung his utility belt on the back of the kitchen door, covered by a plain gray leather jacket. Right. Drink.
It' would have to be a cold drink, this time of the morning. Another hour and he might have risked putting the kettle on but the whistle would wake the dead and he's had enough of that this week. Two more nights, then a whole week in bed. That's a thought worth hanging on to.
The fridge had obviously been learning from the back door, screeching in anger at being opened long before a civilised family would be awake. Stephen held the fridge door still in his right hand, held his breath, strained to hear over the hum of the fridge's deafening motor.
Nothing?
Good.
Milk out, door closed, pour, drink.
Stephen slumped into a hard-backed wooden chair, set his glass down on the table. Right. Paperwork. Before sleep robbed him of the finer details.
"First job," he muttered, flicking through a bundle of triplicate forms, sorting them into time order. "Ah, yes. Ten-twenty. Code Amber at that warehouse in Leith."
What idiot opens a gate to a pocket universe? Then adds another count of stupidity by strolling in alone and unprotected? Muppet. Honestly. You meet some chancers. One copy of “Ritual Magic for Dummies” and they think they're Crowley. Still, he'd had his mobile with him. And there'd been reception in there. Wonder what network he's with. Anyway. Gate closed, tick. Weird frog things contained and disposed of, tick. Idiot rescued and handed over to Department Thirteen for a night in their cells, tick. Next.
Then there'd been the troll. Fourth time this month, apparently. Well, he's off for a holiday in Berwick now. One look at a photo of that railway bridge and he was off like a shot.
Last off was another cemetery job. The usual dead-rising-from-the-grave stuff. Same-old, same-old. Expect more in the run-up to Halloween. Strange how quickly it had all become commonplace.
Tick boxes, cross t's, z's and sevens, dot i's and j's. Sign there and there. Keep the white, hand in the pink and blue tonight. Done. File it.
Stephen finished his glass of milk, poured another and stood up. Right. Jobs for later. Sword.
He picked it off the butcher's block, turned it over in his hand, wondering if it needs cleaning. Did he actually use it tonight? Might as well.
Rozalyn slips her arms around him, hugs him from behind. He lowers the sword, relaxes back into the hug. Her hair smells of honeysuckle and feathers.
“Rough night?” she whispers, lips brushing his earlobe, fingers toying with the buttons on the front of his dark grey jumpsuit.
“Not so bad. Better than last night.”
“Controlled many pests?”
“One or two, one or two.”
“Victims? Casualties?”
“Nope.”
“Good. Anyone who'll remember?”
“Nope. As per.”
She guided his hand, putting the sword back down on the wooden block, directed him towards the stairs.
“You can tell me all about it.”
“Well, first off I...”
“Later.”
Love the intro Imajica.
6000 words in and my plot is solidifying. I can only see my story ending in tragedy though. I'll have to find some way to spin a heroic sacrifice positively.
Now in stompy size!
Thanks. Now, if Stephen Donaldson can make Thomas Covenant into a hero by killing him off, you should have it easy. 16000 words and counting!
Congratulations to our NaNoWriMo winners. I'm currently not among such august company, but there's always next year. Good job, guys.
Cheers! Never mind, I had an advantage as I only work part-time! (I was anti-social last month)
Well, I hit the 50k mark but the story isn't finished. But this time I'm excited to keep writing it.

That sounds like a win, KL!
